Destination Infinity (The Garland Library of Science Fiction)
Published in Textbook Binding by Garland Pub (June, 1975)
Author: Henry Kuttner
Average review score:

A forgotten classic!
This book (aka FURY)was William Burroughs' favorite SF novel, and with good reason. Although the premise is heavily cynical, it is an intriguing idea-- that even under Utopian conditions, humankind must stagnate and die unless driven to strive for new goals, not through romantic idealism, but through the relentless anger of society's outcasts. It is dark rage that drives Sam Harker to force his society from the ennui and strangling security of the undersea Keeps back to the deadly surface, and ultimately, on to the first step to the stars. If you can look past the scientific inaccuracies (the story takes place on a Venus covered with oceans and jungles-- but, after all, it was written in 1947), you will be well rewarded with an assortment of fascinating characters, insightful observations on the human psyche, and a ripping good read!

The Devil and the Doctor (Supernatural and Occult Fiction)
Published in Hardcover by Ayer Co Pub (November, 1976)
Author: David Henry Keller
Average review score:

An over looked Classic: "The Devil and The Doctor"
"The Devil and The Doctor", by David Keller, is a book that i read more than ten years ago, at the age of 15. Keller's book can be most misleading. With illustrations that were the norm of the times, one of my era may believe it to be a childrens book. On the contrary it is an extremely well written book about a man whom is befriended by the Devil and is then told a magnificent story about the Devils relationship to God and the truth about creation. One will find oneself quite surprised by what Keller has to say about the two beings. In Keller's text we find that the Devil is actually an antihero or better still the protagonist of the story.
Filling up most of the pages though, is the story of the docor and his quest to live in the perfect place and to build a wall using the stones from his meadow. This story is peppered with the details of the Devil's story as he gives little bits of the big picture to the doctor a chapter at a time. This story will certainly upset the devoutly faithful christian, and will make the open minded ponder the truths of the universe. It may even form ones religious beliefs to be slightly askew from the norm and to cause one to become athiestic. With wonderful characters-the only one of which we dislike is God-Keller paints a wonderful portrait of what may have been, in an easily read prose.

Galileo's masterpiece comes through to all who are blessed enough to read it. Copernicus would be proud.

Dictionary of Architectural and Building Technology
Published in Hardcover by Elsevier Science Ltd (June, 1986)
Authors: Henry J. Cowan and Peter R. Smith
Average review score:

Architectural dictionary with content
This is one of the best architectural dictionaries that I have found. It has a number of layman terms and quite a few diagrams. It is concise, but contained all of the terms that we have come up with so far.

A Dictionary of Christian Biography: And Literature to the End of the Sixth Century A.D. With an Account of the Principal Sects and Heresies
Published in Library Binding by Hendrickson Publishers, Inc. (July, 1994)
Authors: Henry Wace and William C. Piercy

"Chief Cornerstone to the Christian Library"
This comprehensive one of a kind dictionary covers the span of six centuries, and penetrates into the marrow of the priciple influences of Christianity; whether they be pope or caesar, christian or pagan, orthodox or heretic this impressive volume handles nearly every detail necessary to impart an image of the individual and the indelible impact they made upon the pervasive expanse of Christian history. The facts are straight-foward, and bias is placed only when the information is in need of discretion, not distortion...highly recommended.

Dictionary of German Slang and Colloquial Expressions (Dict of Foreign Lang. Slang)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (February, 2000)
Author: Henry Strutz
Average review score:

Very amusing
This book is an amusing collection of German slang and is in this way a superior, though different, book from Strutz's "German Idioms," published by Barron's. "German Slang" contains some slightly racy, street-wise German that's sure to amuse almost everyone. Some of it, of course, can be offensive. German teachers should look up "Sprachmufti"--a definition I wound up memorizing--"Er haelt sich fuer Sprachmufti [language expert], die Jugendsprache aber checkt er nicht [doesn't understand]."

A Dictionary of Silly Words About Growing Up: Written for Parents Who Never Understand Anything Anyway

Authors: Henry Beard and Roy McKie
Average review score:

a must read for all
I read this book while waiting in the doctors office. It gave me a better understanding of what it was like to be a kid. This book is something that every parent should have. I am not a parent. But I think it gives a different insight of appreciating children

Did They Mention the Music?
Published in Hardcover by NTC/Contemporary Publishing (November, 1989)
Authors: Henry Mancini, Gene Lees, and Graham Lees
Average review score:

A fabulous read!
As I have been an avid fan of Mr. Mancini's work for many years, I was eagerly awaiting the publication of this new extended edition of his autobiography. I wasn't disappointed!!
While co-written with jazz author Gene Lees, Henry's voice comes shining through as readers gain insight into the life of this remarkable man: his humble roots, his quirky sense of humour, his respect for those who worked for him, and the music that made him famous.

From a musical standpoint, this book is incredible! I strongly recommend having a lot of his music on hand as you read. Playing his music softly in the background while I read this book allowed me to listen with new ears. As he explains his rationale for the way his songs are written, the instruments he used, and how they reflect the movies they were used for, you'll want to have the music available to you so you can really hear what he is talking about.

Henry Mancini was truly one of a kind, and after reading this book, I can certainly agree with Gene Lees when he writes of Henry, "The world is a better place because he lived in it, but a smaller place because he left it."

This is one of the most insightful, informative and readable autobiographies I've ever read. Don't hesitate for a second to buy this book!

Dido and Aeneas in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (November, 1995)
Author: Henry Purcell
Average review score:

Very Good Baroque Opera!
This very short Baroque opera composed by Purcell, is probably the best English baroque opera. I contains the most beautiful lament "When I am laid in the earth" is the most beautiful opera air. Also, the final chorus ending in Gm is very beautiful. The score contains the instrumentation, the table of contents, and critical notes on the piece. The editor actually put in the Harpsichord part instead of having the Basso line with Figured Bass so that is an advantage. The Opera takes little over an hour, and the score is full of Basso Continuo arias. buy this score if you are a baroque lover!
